As the world faces the challenges of climate change and growing energy demand, switching to renewable energy is no longer a choice, it is a must. Solar energy, which turns sunlight into electricity without harmful emissions, is a key part of this global change. It offers a clean and sustainable solution for countries and communities around the world.
In Jordan, where there is plenty of sunlight but limited traditional energy sources, solar power is essential and helps the country become more energy independent and contributes directly to global efforts to fight climate change. Jordan has become a leading country in solar energy utilization, setting an example for others to follow.
As of 2023, renewable energy sources contributed to 26% of Jordan’s total electricity generation, with a total installed capacity of 2,681 megawatts from solar and wind energy projects, according to the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources[i]. This demonstrates Jordan’s strong commitment to clean energy and its role as a regional leader in the renewable energy transition.

The Royal Scientific Society (RSS), Jordan’s largest applied research institution, consultancy, and technical support service provider, and a regional leader in the fields of science and technology, is at the forefront of this transformation. It drives Jordan’s green development vision by:
- Leading the development of advanced solar PV projects, supporting Jordan’s renewable energy goals and energy needs.
- Supervising solar projects to ensure they are completed on time, meet quality standards, and are implemented safely.
- Ensuring the reliability and quality of solar projects thorough testing and certification.
- Offering expert advice and conducting feasibility studies to support solar investments across different sectors.
- Setting standards and best practices to ensure safe and efficient use of solar technologies.
- Working with national and international partners to increase the adoption of solar energy and encourage innovation.
By combining research, technology, and a strong focus on national priorities, and with over 200 MW of solar projects developed and supervised, RSS is helping Jordan lead the way in building a cleaner, stronger future. Each solar panel installed is more than just an energy solution, it’s a commitment to our planet and a reflection of the power we all have to make a difference.
As we celebrate Earth Day, we’re reminded of this year’s powerful theme “Our Power, Our Planet.” It’s a call for everyone – governments, businesses, and individuals – to take meaningful steps toward a healthier world. Every solar panel is not just a tool, it’s a symbol of real change. It shows that we care, and that we’re ready to act.
