SHAREN – Energy-Sharing Solutions and Communities for Renewable Energy in Mediterranean Historic Centres

The Royal Scientific Society (RSS) – Jordan is proud to be a partner in the SHAREN Project (Energy-Sharing Solutions and Communities for Renewable Energy in Mediterranean Historic Centres), a three-year initiative co-funded by the European Union under the Interreg NEXT MED Programme.

SHAREN brings together partners from Jordan, Spain, Lebanon, Türkiye, and Italy to collaboratively address the challenge of advancing the energy transition in Mediterranean historic urban areas. The project focuses on integrating renewable energy solutions in heritage contexts while respecting cultural, architectural, and regulatory requirements.

The project aims to:

  • Develop and test Energy Sharing Solutions (ESS) and Renewable Energy Communities (RECs) adapted to the specific conditions of historic centres.
  • Enable local clean energy generation, reduce energy costs, and lower greenhouse gas emissions without compromising heritage value.
  • Strengthen community engagement and citizen participation by empowering local stakeholders in the energy transition.
  • Support evidence-based policymaking through shared guidelines, protocols, and policy recommendations.
  • Promote replication and scalability through pilot projects and structured knowledge-transfer tools.

Project Overview

  • Duration: September 2025 – September 2028
  • Total Budget: €2.5 million
  • EU Contribution: €2.25 million (89%)

Project Launch and Kick-off Meeting

The SHAREN Project was officially launched during its kick-off meeting held in Valencia, Spain, hosted by the Instituto Valenciano de la Edificación (IVE). The meeting marked the start of the three-year initiative and brought together project partners from Jordan, Spain, Lebanon, Italy, and Türkiye. RSS participated in the kick-off discussions, contributing to the planning of pilot activities and stakeholder engagement for the Jordan component of the project.

Sessions included guidance from the Interreg NEXT MED Joint Secretariat, discussions on European cooperation and energy communities, and presentations of pilot activities planned in participating countries, including Madaba, Jordan. The meeting also introduced SHAREN’s communication strategy and initial visibility materials, setting the foundation for coordinated implementation across the region.
